Choosing between a day trip and a Doubtful Sound overnight cruise depends on your budget and schedule. The overnight option provides a slower pace. It allows you to explore the water after the day boats return to Manapouri.
How much does a Doubtful Sound overnight cruise cost?
Overnight cruises range from NZD $499 to $749.
Day cruises from Manapouri start around NZD $289 to $399. The overnight option costs roughly double the base day fare. Prices fluctuate based on the season. Peak season runs from December to March.
What does the overnight ticket include?
The ticket covers all transport, your cabin, and two meals.
Because there is no independent access to Doubtful Sound, your ticket includes the multi-stage journey. You get the 45 to 60-minute boat ride across Lake Manapouri. You also get the 45-minute coach trip over Wilmot Pass. On the vessel, dinner and breakfast are provided.

What activities happen on the overnight cruise?
Passengers can kayak in the fiord or ride in a small tender boat.
Kayaking is a core benefit of staying overnight. Day boats do not offer this activity. Note that children under 10 years old are generally not permitted to participate in kayaking activities. Space and equipment can be limited, so listen to the crew instructions upon boarding.
How does the overnight experience compare to a day trip?
You get more time on the water and complete quiet in the evening.
A standard day cruise on the fiord lasts about 2.5 to 3 hours. The overnight boat stays on the water until the next morning. Once the day visitors leave Deep Cove, your vessel is the only one out there.

What should I pack for an overnight stay?
Bring one small overnight bag and warm layers.
- Luggage: Guests are restricted to one small overnight bag due to limited space. Store large luggage in Manapouri.
- Clothing: Pack a waterproof jacket. The area gets 3,000 to 6,000 mm (120 to 240 inches) of rain annually. Bring a warm fleece, as the fiord is cold and windy.
- Extras: Bring insect repellent for sandflies and binoculars for spotting dolphins or penguins.
Questions travellers ask
Will I see wildlife on the overnight cruise?
Doubtful Sound is home to a resident pod of bottlenose dolphins and New Zealand fur seals. You might also spot rare Fiordland crested penguins. Binoculars help you see them from the boat deck.
Can I drive directly to the overnight cruise?
No. There is no independent road access. You must park at the Manapouri Visitor Centre. From there, you join the organized tour across the lake and over Wilmot Pass.
Can I fly a drone from the overnight boat?
No. Drones are prohibited in Fiordland National Park without a specific permit.
